Children
By initiating treatment between the ages of 7 and 9, we actively support healthy growth and development, reducing the likelihood of future dental and oral complications.
In many instances, early orthodontic screening may result in a recommendation for no immediate treatment. Regular monitoring of your child’s growth and dental development is advised to ensure timely and effective intervention.
By the age of 7, the first permanent molars have erupted along with most of the permanent incisors. The relationship of these teeth along with the jaws allow assessment of dental and facial development.
Earlier (Phase One) treatment typically begins around age eight or nine and aims to prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing.
Some indicators of the need for early intervention may be:
-Early or late loss of baby teeth
-Mouth breathing
-Digit-sucking
-Absent teeth
-Crowded, misplaced or unerupted teeth
-Malalignment of one or both jaws
-Excessively protrusive teeth with difficulty in closing the lips
-Upper and lower teeth that do not meet correctly
-Grinding or clenching of the teeth
Teenagers
Orthodontic treatment becomes particularly crucial during the adolescent years when significant and definitive dental and facial development takes place.
Typically, between the ages of 11 and 13, all permanent teeth erupt, greatly facilitating orthodontic tooth movement compared to adulthood. Characteristic rapid facial growth often aids in the improvement of profile and jaw relationships.
In this stage of life, initiating orthodontic care can yield remarkable results in achieving proper teeth alignment.
Some common problems addressed at this age include:
-Incorrect bite
-Excessive protrusion of the teeth
-Difficulty in closing the lips and swallowing
-Imbalance of upper and lower jaw
-Crowding of the dentition
-Spacing in the dentition
-Excessively deep bite
-Open bite
-Absent teeth
Adults
Gone are the days when braces were solely for teenagers. The field of adult orthodontic care has continued to progress, making orthodontic treatments more appealing than ever for adults.
Important differences to consider when planning treatment for adults versus younger patients are the following:
- The growth and development of the skeletal structures of the face will be complete. Major changes in the skeletal structures and profile may not be possible with orthodontic appliances alone.
- Periodontal conditions are more prevalent in adults and may need to be addressed prior to orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic tooth movement relies on a healthy periodontium with adequate support for the dentition. Any existing periodontal problems will need to be addressed prior to orthodontic treatment to eliminate the risk of further deterioration.
- Importantly, several appliances exist which aim to decrease the social impact of undergoing orthodontic treatment. These include ceramic brackets and clear aligners.
